Charleston or Charles Town, Carolina's history dates back to 1670 when settlers landed on the west bank of the Ashley River. In 1680, the city moved to its current location Oyster Point. Charleston is often referred to as The Holy City as it was one of the few places in the original thirteen colonies to provide religious tolerance to both the French Huguenots and Jews. Even today, Charleston is the only city in the United States with a French Huguenot Church. Charleston is also famous for its role in the opening engagement of the civil war. On April 10, 1861, Brig. General Beauregard commander of the provisional Confederate force at Charleston, South Carolina, demanded the surrender of the Union garrison at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Anderson refused and on April 12, Confederate batteries opened fire on Fort Sumter. Although their were no casualties during the bombardment, on April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter.
